What to Expect after Breast Augmentation
After your procedure, your results will be immediately visible, sort of. Your breast implants will initially be high on your chest. That's intentional--letting them settle into place in your breasts naturally contributes to natural-looking results. In addition, postoperative swelling can make your breasts look larger than you wanted them to be. Don't worry, this will subside and your breasts will be the size you discussed with Dr. Gawley during consultation.
You can expect to be sore for a while after surgery. Count on taking a week off work, and being prepared to take several weeks to get back to feeling completely normal and getting back to your full exercise routine.
You may experience increased self-confidence and increased levels of sexual desire after your breast augmentation, but this cannot be guaranteed.
For more information, please see our full page What to expect after breast augmentation, or schedule a consultation with Phoenix board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bryan Gawley.

Body Contouring Options
SmartLipo is laser-assisted liposuction. It uses laser energy to damage or rupture fat cells, making it easier for them to be removed. Other tissues, which tend to be more robust, are less affected by the laser energy, which is precisely controlled to avoid burning.
The skin, however, will be heated, which is good. The small amount of thermal damage in the skin will stimulate the skin to produce collagen, which is essential for elastic skin. Collagen levels in skin decline with age, which contributes to sagging of the skin and other tissues.
Another tissue that is affected by the laser energy is blood vessels, which w
ill be cauterized (sealed) to reduce bleeding, swelling, and bruising in the treatment area. The addition of laser energy also allows for a smaller cannula to be used, allowing for a smaller incision and precise treatment of finer fat deposits.
Dr. Gawley was one of the first board-certified plastic surgeons to offer SmartLipo. He has seen great results from the procedure and strongly recommends it for appropriate candidates.
To learn more about SmartLipo and whether it is the right procedure for you, please contact Dr. Bryan Gawley for a consultation at his Phoenix, Arizona-area office.

Mommy Makeover Candidacy
• In good general health
• At or near her ideal weight
• At least six months after pregnancy or the weaning of her baby from breastfeeding
• Planning on having no more children
These candidacy requirements are designed not only to ensure your procedure is as safe as possible, but also to ensure you are most likely to get the results you desire from your surgery. It's impossible to predict exactly what your post-pregnancy body is going to look like until it's been given a chance to recover. This means waiting at least six months after the pregnancy or after you've finished breastfeeding.
It also means waiting until you have tried your best to regain your pre-pregnancy body on your own. Liposuction cannot be relied on for weight loss, but it can be used to target specific fat deposits that you feel detract from your figure. By slimming down on your own, you can separate the deposits that will respond to diet and exercise from those that will not, allowing your mommy makeover to target the truly troublesome deposits. Your exercise routine will also help you establish positive healthy habits that will help your mommy makeover results be permanent.
You will also still be able to have children after your mommy makeover, but if you do, your results may be damaged.
The best way to learn whether you are a candidate for a mommy makeover is to schedule a consultation with Phoenix, Arizona board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bryan Gawley.

What Is a Mommy Makeover?
Just as the fruit destroys the flower, pregnancy can be very hard on a woman's body. It can make you feel less attractive and less wanted, which may have been fine in the days when a woman's life was considered over when she had children. Now, though, women have many more opportunities and expectations, but sometimes they may lack confidence to be or do all the things they want because the impact of pregnancy on their appearance makes them feel old or unattractive.
A mommy makeover is a customized combination of plastic surgery procedure designed to help women regain their pre-pregnancy appearance. Depending on your cosmetic concerns and aesthetic goals, a mommy makeover could be practically anything. Most commonly, though women request:
Because most often women are concerned about the changes in their breasts, slack abdominal skin, stretch marks, and stubborn pockets of baby fat.

Combining Breast Augmentation and SmartLipo™
Because of its versatility and precision, SmartLipo can be used on smaller and more delicate areas of the body that traditional liposuction is not good for, including:
• Neck
• Chin
• Face
• Knees
By combining SmartLipo with your breast augmentation procedure, you can obtain a dramatic new look that you’re proud of. Some mothers who are recovering from pregnancy have worked hard to get their bodies back in shape, only to be discouraged by certain changes that cannot be reversed. Pairing liposuction with a breast augmentation is common in mommy makeovers.
If you have further questions about breast augmentation, liposuction, or any other plastic surgery procedure, please contact experienced Phoenix plastic surgeon Dr. Bryan Gawley today to schedule an initial consultation.

Can Getting Sick Affect My Surgery?
You should never have any type of surgery when you’re ill. Your body needs the cells that are fighting your illness to help you heal after surgery. A weakened immune system can cause problems during the recovery process. Additionally, going under general anesthesia when you are sick can have unwanted side effects. You want your body to be fully prepared for the intensive healing required after plastic surgery.
If you get a bacterial infection before surgery, this also increases the risk of infection and other complications. If you are down to the final week before your surgery and you are still sick, speak with Dr. Gawley. He may recommend re-scheduling your surgery to a later date.
Some of the conditions that might lead to a delay of your surgery include:
- Stomach virus or flu
- Fever
- Sinus infection or cold within two weeks of surgery
- Bronchitis or pneumonia within one month of surgery
- Infected skin or rash in the surgical area
If you have further questions about preparing for plastic surgery, please contact experienced Glendale, Arizona plastic surgeon Dr. Bryan Gawley today.

Myth: Women over 50 shouldn’t have breast augmentation performed.
Truth: As long as a patient is in good health and free of breast cancer, breast augmentation can be performed at virutally any adult age. A routine mammogram is required for patients over the age of 35, or patients who have had a family history of breast cancer.
