SmartLipo is a relatively new technology that has the potential to improve body contouring results for many men and women.

SmartLipo is laser-assisted liposuction. It uses laser energy to damage or rupture fat cells, making it easier for them to be removed. Other tissues, which tend to be more robust, are less affected by the laser energy, which is precisely controlled to avoid burning.

The skin, however, will be heated, which is good. The small amount of thermal damage in the skin will stimulate the skin to produce collagen, which is essential for elastic skin. Collagen levels in skin decline with age, which contributes to sagging of the skin and other tissues.

Another tissue that is affected by the laser energy is blood vessels, which will be cauterized (sealed) to reduce bleeding, swelling, and bruising in the treatment area.

The addition of laser energy also allows for a smaller cannula to be used, allowing for a smaller incision and precise treatment of finer fat deposits.
